HYDERABAD, May 23: A large number of people, including women and children, of a scheduled caste community staged a protest demonstration outside the office of the Sindh Rural Development Society, an NGO, in Tando Jam to protest against alleged excesses and threats of a local landlord.

They claimed that the landlord, who belonged to the ruling party, through a member of their own community was harassing and intimidating them by lodging false cases against their community members.

They appealed to the leader of the NGO, Mohammad Ilyas Khokhar, to intervene in the matter and save them from the tyranny of the landlord.

Ilyas Khokhar, on the occasion, met the protesters and demanded of the government to control its party leaders and ensure justice to minorities.

LIBRARY RENAMED: The department of Comparative Religion and Islamic Culture, University of Sindh, here on Friday renamed its seminar library Dr A.W.J. Halepoto in recognition of his scholarly services.

Addressing a ceremony, the university’s vice-chancellor, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, lauded the service of Dr Halepoto, an international religious scholar, and said that Dr Halepoto had not only rendered scholarly services to his country but also to the entire Islamic world.

He said that Dr Halepoto was admired by the founder of the university and distinguished scholar Allama I.I.Kazi.

He announced that more books and furniture will be provided to the department.

Head of the department, Dr Anwar Pathan aslo spoke.
