LAHORE, May 12: Fancied four-year-old colt Grue overwhelmed his six opponents to win the feature event during the day/night Lahore Summer Meeting at the floodlit Racecourse on Sunday evening.

The son of Bedouin Invader, Grue, backed at 60 to 100 favourite, took the lead at the top of the straight and rolled to a comfortable two-length victory. The two-to one chance second favourite filly Bright Flame finished second and the chestnut, Harry Can View came third. Charismatic completed the frame.

The winner, who was the overwhelming punters’ choice, clocked one minute eight seconds over the sprinting distance of 1,100 metres. This was the sixth and last race of the six-event card.

Malik Abdul Qadir, owned Grue gave jockey Shahid Rehman, his third and trainer Haji Abid Mahmood his second victory of the day. Shahid had earlier partnered Striker in the third race and Will He Wish in the fifth and supporting event.

Abid Mahmood sent out Will He Wish and Grue to excel among trainers.

A race earlier, four-year-old colt Will He Wish staged a stirring charge down the home stretch to claim the supporting event contested over 1,100 metres defeating chestnut horse Munsaf by a length.

For a while, Munsaf put up a token challenge to Will He Wish but the better rider prevailed and won the race. Munsaf’s riding boy Tariq Habib was no match to the far more skilled jockey Shahid Rehman.

Will He Wish’s success must have proved morale booster for his owner, Lahore Race Club (LRC) steward Khawaja M. Arif, who is convalescing in London after a heart surgery.

Shahid Rehman was lucky to get the ride of four-year-old bay colt, Striker at the last minute when he substituted the riding boy Anjum by owner Masood Pervez. The colt won in spite of his going wide in the straight. Shahid controlled the colt and guided on the right course to win by about four lengths from front-running Dream Act.

The second Summer Meeting proved a profitable exercise for punters when all the six events were bagged by favourites. They were: Victory King (60 to 100), Happy Dancer (70 to 100), Striker (25 to 100), Majestic Desert (40 to 100), Will He Wish (40 to 100) and Grue (60 to 100).

On Wednesday punters had a good drubbing when the majority events were won by long shots.

The favourites’ triumph on Sunday enabled two and half dozen punters to hit the Super Jack Pot, each pocketing Rs6,220.
