KARACHI, May 9: Tension gripped parts of Lyari following the killing of an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement late Thursday night.

Police said that Ajaz Qureshi, stated to be an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, was gunned down in Chakiwara late night. The body was shifted to the civil hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Following his death, tension gripped the areas of Chakiwara, Agra Taj and Kharadar where armed men had shops and markets closed down. Police patrolled the streets of Lyari but could not control the armed men.

Lyari has been tense since the police operation was launched Wednesday though it was abandoned the following day. An eight-year-old girl lost her life early on Thursday when a stray bullet hit her while she was standing in the balcony of her apartment in the strife-torn locality.

Robbed

A family was robbed of cash, jewellery and valuables by armed gunmen outside their house in Nazimabad in the early hours of Friday.

Police said that a close relative of Liaquat Qureshi, a resident of Nazimabad No 4, had arrived here from Dubai. The family received her at the airport and hired a radio cab to get home. Three armed men intercepted them as soon as they reached home. It seemed that the armed men had been chasing them in a car right from the airport. They deprived the family of three suitcases, foreign currency, jewellery, cellular phones and other valuables before fleeing, said SP Liaquatabad Fayyaz Qureshi.
