Traffic woes

SHEIKHUPURA, May 1: Civic circles have vented their spleen over the deteriorating traffic situation in the district.

A survey conducted by this correspondent reveals that some police officials are involved in taking bribe from rickshaw drivers to let them park their vehicles at illegally-constructed stands which trigger gridlocks on many roads.

Bar president Malik Nasrullah Khan Wattoo says teenagers, who drive mostly without a license, often violate traffic rules, causing sometimes serious accidents.

He says the traffic police seem to be helpless as their own colleagues have provided cards to most of the teenage drivers which they produce to escape any violation and fine.

The poor strategy to cope with the ever-increasing traffic load and accidents on Lahore-Sargodha Road, Batti Chowk and Farooqabad has exposed the performance of the traffic police.

City’s Jamaat-i-Islami amir Tufa Dastagir says shopkeepers have encroached upon Lahore-Sargodha Road, disturbing the traffic flow.

They have urged the chief minister, the DIG (Traffic) and the SP (Traffic) to take immediate action for the smooth running of traffic in the district.
