LAHORE, April 22: A student of the Lahore University of Management Sciences allegedly committed suicide on Tuesday in his hostel room over poor results.

The Defence B-division police said the young man hanged himself.

Hashir Munawwar of DHA Karachi was doing graduation with economics as major subject at the university. He, in the last year of his education, could not achieve passing numbers in the last three term examinations and failed to maintain the CGPA.

According to the LUMS officials, the university administration separated him from his courses due to which he was disheartened for the last three days. On Tuesday, Hashir’s mother called him on his cell phone but he did not attend the call after which she (the mother) rang up her younger son Aqib Munawwar, a second-year student at the same university.

Aqib reached his brother’s room in M-1 hostel and on finding no response, called the warden who opened the door and found Hashir hanged with the ceiling fan.

The police, after being informed, reached the scene and started investigating the matter.

A university student, seeking anonymity, told Dawn that Hashir received a message from the university administration three days ago that he had been separated from the course. He said it was first time in the history of the university that a student had committed suicide.

According to another LUMS’ student, Hashir had his breakfast with his brother Aqib earlier on Tuesday morning and was looking normal. The LUMS officials, he said, would hold a news conference today (Wednesday) to reveal details about the student.

According to the Defence Circle Supervisory Police Officer Ayaz Saleem, initial investigation revealed that Hashir was disturbed over his continuous failure in the exams and finally got dejected after his parents received a letter from the university two weeks ago about his poor performance over which his father scolded him. He said the victim used an iron wire to hang himself.
