KARACHI, March 17: A 20-year-old woman was killed and her husband wounded on Monday by a single bullet in Chakiwara, a locality in mafia-infested Lyari.

Police said some time around 12.30pm near Mira Naka Bridge, a couple received a bullet that travelled through the victim’s jeep hitting the woman in the neck and her husband in the left armpit.

Rekha Kumari was pronounced dead on the spot and her body and injured husband, Naresh Kumar, were transported to the Civil Hospital in their jeep by the public before the police arrived on the scene.

Hospital sources said the victims were shot from a very close range as the bullet first shot through the woman and then hit her husband. They said the injured man was in a precarious condition.

The police said the couple, residents of Uthal, Balochistan, were going to visit the mother of the deceased in Baghdadi area in their jeep No BB-7070.

The SHO of Chakiwara, Abid Tanoli, did not discuss details about possible suspects and said the couple were hit by a stray bullet.

He said he did not believe the shooting to be gang related. “I do not rule out the possibility of personal enmity behind the incident,” he added.

He said the police were unsure of a motive. “It is possible the bullet might have come from one of the gangs, though the vicinity has been relatively calm for the past many days,” he said.

SIO (Station Investigation Officer) of Chakiwara, Inspector Fayyaz Ahmed, told Dawn that the robbers tried to intercept Naresh Kumar and they opened fire when he tried to speed away.

Victim Marjan Khan, hailing from Waziristan, was shifted to the Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Bullet-riddled body found

The bullet-riddled body of an unknown young man was found in bushes near Mubarak Village in Maripur.

The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital for autopsy. Sources said the victim, clad in light brown shalwar-qamees, received multiple bullet wounds in his upper torso.

They said the man appeared to be in his late 20s.
