LAHORE, March 16: An Indian man convicted over a bombing that killed four people in Pakistan will be hanged on April 1, prison officials said on Sunday.

Sarabjit Singh has been in jail in Pakistan and the Supreme Court rejected an appeal against his death penalty, while President Pervez Musharraf also rejected his mercy petition in March.

“His death warrants have been issued and we have received them. He will be executed/hanged on April 1,” deputy chief of Lahore’s main Kot Lakhpat prison Shabbar Khan told AFP.

Singh’s lawyer Abdul Hameed Rana said that President Musharraf could still pardon his client, but India also needs to release all such Pakistani prisoners.

Singh’s family says he is a farmer who crossed the border into Pakistan 15 years ago while drunk, and then was confused with a man named Manjit Singh, who Pakistan blames for a series of bombings in Lahore.—AFP
