ISLAMABAD, March 15: Almost 60 per cent of the 328 newly- elected MNAs who take oath on Monday will be taking their seats in the National Assembly for the first time.
According to the election results, announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan, 136 experienced and 192 new faces will sit in the 9th legislative assembly in the country’s history since the first general elections held in 1970.
Among 136 experienced legislators, 108 are those who were also members of the previous assembly.
The break-up shows that both the seats from the capital have been won by the first timers belonging to Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) whereas Balochistan has sent the highest (84.6 per cent) first timers to the new assembly. Out of 13 newly-elected MNAs on general seats from Balochistan, 11 are new faces. Out of 32 MNAs from NWFP, 19 are first timers. Similarly, there are 77 new faces from Punjab, 28 from Sindh and seven from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). There are 44 women and minority legislators on 70 reserved seats who will be administering oath as MNA for the first time.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has the credit to award party tickets to most of the new faces in Karachi and Hyderabad. Similarly, out of 13 NA seats from Lahore, eight have been captured by those who are making debut in the lower house.
Among 108 members of the previous assembly, who have once again been re-elected, a majority of 40 members have been re- elected on the ticket of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). As many as 34 MNAs of the previous assembly have been successful again on the PML-Q ticket, 16 on the PML-N ticket, five on MQM ticket, four on MMA ticket, six independents and three from other parties.
