Sher Afgan recounts ballot horror

MIANWALI, Feb 20: Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) Dr Sher Afgan has lost the elections 2008, it was announced after a recount of rejected ballot papers here on Wednesday.

District Returning Officer Baqir Ali Rana ordered a recount of rejected votes of NA-72 on a plea by Dr Afgan. According to unofficial results, Dr Afgan got 46,863 votes and independent candidate Humair Hayat Rokhri got 48,922 votes. From 292 polling stations in the constituency, 6,412 votes were reportedly rejected during the first count by presiding officers. The recount held at the office of Returning Officer Rana Muhammad Yousaf in the presence of the applicant and the representatives of the winner.

The recount added 50 more votes to Mr Afgan and 52 to Mr Rokhari.

After the recount, Mr Afgan filed an application for the recount of all ballot papers, which the authorities rejected.
