ISLAMABAD, Feb 15: Pakistan People’s Party will try to remove President Pervez Musharraf from office if it wins elections, a senior party official said on Friday.

“The ouster of Musharraf will put Pakistan back on the track of real democracy,” Babar Awan, a member of the PPP’s central executive committee, told The Associated Press.

PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has previously left open the possibility of working with President Musharraf.

“We will win if the elections are not massively rigged,” Mr Awan said.

On the other side, Pakistan Muslim League rejected President Musharraf’s warning he issued on Thursday that opposition parties would not be allowed to stage street protests after the elections, saying it would stage nationwide rallies if it believes the polls were manipulated.

“We know Musharraf wants to rig the elections,” said Sadiq-ul-Farooq, a senior member of the PML-N. “If he did it, we will force him to quit through street protests.”—AP
