LAHORE, Feb 13: The Punjab government on Wednesday amended the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance 1960 to make it compatible with the Constitution of Pakistan.

Under the amended law, any official of a district government can be authorised to detain person(s) found disturbing or intending to disturb law and order, or who is considered to be a security risk, for one month.

The home secretary has now the powers to extend the detention for a further period of two months. A review board to be constituted by the Lahore High Court can grant any further detention which would be for a total period of eight months.

The government will now be required to give charge-sheet to the detained person(s) within 15 days of their detention.
