SABA elects new office-bearers

KARACHI, Feb 12: Brig (retd) Rashid Ali Malik and former international Abdul Nasir were elected as president and secretary respectively of the Sindh Amateur Basketball Association (SABA) for the next term of four years in the elections held at a local hotel on Tuesday.

While the retired brigadier came at the helm of affairs for the second time running, Nasir was elevated to the post first time replacing Syed Ziauddin from Hyderabad who did not attend the meeting.

The general body adopted revised constitution on the lines of POA’s model constitution in addition to creating women’s wing.

The elections were endorsed by the Sindh Olympic Association (SOA) and the Sindh Sports Board (SSB) who sent their representatives in the meeting as observers.

The SOA was represented by its secretary, Ahmed Ali and committee member Engr. Syed Mahfoozul Haq while Mohammad Anjum and Mohammad Shahid attended the meeting on behalf of the SSB.

The elections, that were delayed for almost two years were attended by five of the six affiliated units of SABA namely Karachi, Mirpur Khas, Sukkur, Larkana and Thatta.

Malik, a former secretary of the Pakistan Amateur Basketball Federation and a former cager of repute, vowed to revive the game at the grassroots level in the province.

The SABA chief said he will ensure that at least a tournament takes place in both urban and rural Sindh every two months.

President: Brig (retd) Rashid Ali Malik; senior vice-president: Abid Iftikhar Mallhi; vice-presidents Khawaja Saad Zia, Noorul Abedin, Amjad Ali and Mrs. Abida Shaheen; secretary: Abdul Nasir; treasurer: Jehangir Khan; associate secretaries: Amna Mukhtar and Kashan Ahmed.

Executive Committee: Altaf Ali Shaikh (Larkana); Iqbal Hussain (Thatta); M. Idrees (Karachi); Raza Agha (Karachi); Shazia Yousuf (Karachi), Nargis (Sukkur), Mrs. Tahira Saeed (Mirpurkhas) and Shahbaz Ahmed (Mirpurkhas).

Selection Committee: Javed Akhtar, Jahangir Khan and Kashan Ahmed.
