AMELIA ISLAND (Florida), April 11: Second-seeded Justine Henin experienced tentative moments adjusting to the clay surface during her 6-4 7-5 second round win over Clarisa Fernandez of Argentina on Wednesday at the Bausch & Lomb Championships.

Henin, a semifinalist at the French Open last year as well as a finalist at Wimbledon, was making her first clay-court appearance this season.

The evening match between third-seeded Jelena Dokic, who won last week’s title at Sarasota, and France’s Mary Pierce was postponed because of rain.

Three seeded players, seventh-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy of the U.S., eighth-seeded Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain and 13th-seeded Alexandra Stevenson of the U.S, all lost second round matches on Wednesday.

Shaughnessy, who reached the quarterfinals here last year, suffered a 6-1 1-6 6-0 loss to Paola Suarez of Argentina.

Sanchez-Vicario, a two-time Bausch & Lomb champion, went down to Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy 6-2 6-2.

Stevenson, who has been bothered with a wrist injury since last week’s tournament in Sarasota, lost 2-6 6-0 6-2 to Anastasia Myskina of Russia.

Henin posted a high 41 unforced errors in her match, although she countered with 34 outright winners.
