PPP man’s driver dies in ambush

TOBA TEK SINGH, Feb 8: The NA-92 PPP candidate’s driver died while a supporter sustained critical injuries in an `attack by rivals’ in Gojra on Friday.

A police official said that driver Malik Qasim of Chak 45-GB and accused Rana Ghulam Nabi of Chak 356-GB had exchanged harsh words over some issue in the election office of PPP candidate Chaudry Khalid Bashir.

He said Ghulam Nabi later ambushed Malik Qasim on the Gojra-Moongi Road when he was returning from the election campaign of Ch Bashir along with Waqas, one of the supporters of his employer. Qasim died on the spot while Waqas was admitted to the Gojra THQ hospital in critical condition.

Gojra Sadar police said they were conducting raids to arrest the accused.

A Gojra PPP spokesman said the attack was meant to kill party candidate Chaudhry Khalid Bashir who often travelled in the same car during campaign but luckily he was not on board.

He added that accused Ghulam Nabi was a supporter of PML-Q candidates Begum Farkhanda Amjad Warraich and Bilal Asghar Warraich.

The Warraich group however refuted the allegation and said that both the deceased and accused were of the same (PPP) group.
