NAWABSHAH, Feb 5: A woman councillor observed token hunger strike outside the local press club on Monday to protest against a landlord for allegedly torturing her.

Ghazala Khaskheli, a member of Ismail Khan Brohi union council accompanied by her husband Khalid Hussain Khaskheli and father Sain Bux told reporters that on January 15, she and her husband were going to their village Haji Mian Khan Rind when an influential landlord, his son and their servants stopped them.

She alleged that the servant on the orders of the landlord tortured her husband whereas the landlord tried to kidnap her. She was rescued by villagers who gathered on hearing their hue and cry, leading to the escape of the assailants, she added.

Upon approaching the Jam Saheb police station to register a complaint, she alleged, the SHO instead booked her husband, father, brothers, uncle and others on the desire of landlord. She said that the police had been raiding their houses since then.

She appealed to the authorities to direct the police to provide security and justice to her, and arrest the landlord and his servants.

HOLIDAY: The Nawabshah district government has declared February 7 as a public holiday on account of Chehlum of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, said a notification issued here on Monday.
