KARACHI: Vulnerable groups

Published February 2, 2008

KARACHI, Feb 1: Retired Justice Majida Rizvi urged the participants of a training and capacity-building workshop to protect the rights of vulnerable groups in society as much as they possibly can.

The workshop on participatory citizen-police interaction for an improved policing of human rights violation was organised by Shehri-CBE here at a local hotel on Friday.

The participants included police officials and representatives of an NGO.

Justice Rizvi told the participants that innocent people were still being picked up by law enforcement agencies. She recalled a case of a poor woman whose son was rounded up by the police in a perfunctory manner.

“He spent nine months in prison without any reason and I am telling you such things are still happening,” she said.

A participant pointed out that they were also given targets to arrest people. The participants were of the view that the fund, which was being wasted by the state, should be spent on the development of vulnerable groups of society.

They also said that the public exchequer should not be wasted on the security of government servants and elected representatives.
