MUMBAI, Jan 21: India selectors omitted former captains Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly on Sunday from the limited-overs squad for the upcoming triangular series in Australia.

The one-day series beginning Feb. 3 that will feature world champion Australia and last year’s World Cup finalist Sri Lanka.

Dravid and Ganguly featured in India’s 72-run test victory over Australia at Perth on Saturday that brought the touring team back in the four-match series after losing the initial two tests.

India’s fourth and final test match against Australia starts Thursday in Adelaide.

Dravid did not get a recall to the one-day squad after missing the home series against Australia and Pakistan earlier this season due to poor form.

Selectors opted for middle-order batsman Rohit Sharma, who featured in India’s squad that won the Twenty20 world championship in September.

Ganguly was replaced by left-hand batsman Suresh Raina, who returns to the squad after being sidelined for a year by his knee injury.

Seasoned left-arm spinner Murali Karthik was dropped despite an impressive performance against Australia in India. His spin-bowling slot was filled by young leg-spinner Piyush Chawla.

Experienced middle-order batsman V.V.S. Laxman continued to be left out of the one-day squad, while pace ace Zaheer Khan was ruled out by a heel injury.

“Looking toward the future India team, the selectors have provided an excellent platform for the youngsters who have performed well in domestic competitions,” said Niranjan Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The same Indian squad will also play a Twenty20 international against Australia after the completion of the ongoing four-test series.
