LAHORE, April 3: Punjab Health Minister Prof Mahmood Ahmad Chaudhry on Wednesday ordered an inquiry into the delay in extending medical treatment to the elder son of Dawn’s special political correspondent Ashraf Mumtaz at the Trauma Centre of Services Hospital.

The minister has sought a report as to “what went wrong” within a week’s time.

Talking to Dawn, Prof Chaudhry said it was a matter of grave concern that a 16-year-old boy perished while lying in the “so-called” Trauma Centre for over three long hours.

Sami Aleem was seriously injured in an accident and was rushed the Trauma Centre by passers-by on Tuesday afternoon. Witnesses said the doctors continued to avoid treating the boy on one excuse or the other and did nothing to stop bleeding.

Meanwhile, PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, former chief minister Shahbaz Sharif, PML(QA) president Mian Azhar, PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Faheem, federal Law Minister Khalid Ranjha, Punjab Health Minister Prof Chaudhry and Revenue Minister Malik Aslam Khan have expressed their profound grief and sorrow at the death of Mr Mumtaz’s son.

COMMITTEE: Meanwhile, the Services Hospital medical superintendent has constituted a four-member inquiry committee to probe into the alleged negligence of Trauma Centre duty doctors in providing proper treatment to the son of Mr Mumtaz.
