KARACHI, Jan 3: The World Sindhi Congress has expressed grave concern over the health of Dr Safdar Sarki, ex-chairman of the WSC Dr Sarki who is currently being held in a prison in Zhob, Balochistan.

According to a WSC statement received here on Thursday, Dr Sarki was picked up by security agencies in February 2006 from his residence in Karachi and for about 20 months, his whereabouts remained unknown. Finally, on the orders of the Supreme Court, the authorities declared Dr Sarki’s whereabouts and produced him in the sessions court in Hub in October 2007.

The Supreme Court also ordered the secretary of health of Balochistan to ensure proper medical treatment and hospitalisation of Dr Sarki; that medical treatment should be provided in the course of the day; and that he should be allowed to meet his family members.

But, the statement said: “Till today, these orders have not been fully implemented”. He has not received proper medical treatment, and has not been admitted to a hospital.

According to latest reports, the statement said, Dr Sarki’s medical condition was getting worse and he was getting weaker day by day. According to Mohammed Khan Shaikh, his lawyer, he could not stand when he went to see him quite recently. Four policemen were dragging him. He has a serious eye condition and the jail doctor has recommended his treatment in the Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi. Again, the authorities refuse to comply with the court orders and the doctor’s recommendation.

The WSC asked the authorities to comply with the court orders and the doctor’s recommendations, move Dr Sarki to a reputable hospital where he could be treated properly, allow him easy access to his lawyers, family and friends and provide him healthy diet.
