HYDERABAD, April 3: The Sindh Abadgar Board has expressed its concern over the slide in the prices of wheat and appealed to the government to purchase wheat from the growers of Sindh without any delay to save them from huge losses.

A spokesman for the board told Dawn that wheat in Sindh was being harvested and the prices had come down to Rs260 per maund. He urged the government to start purchasing wheat from the growers at the notified rates of Rs300 per maund.

He said that the wheat purchasing centres should purchase wheat from the growers directly.

He regretted that when there was acute shortage of water, the poor growers were not being paid just prices for their cash crop although the prices of agricultural inputs had increased manifolds.

The spokesman said that in India where the prices of agricultural inputs were half of the rates of Pakistan and the power for tube wells was being supplied almost free of charge, the price of wheat had been fixed at Rs312 per maund.—Bureau
