KARACHI: MQM closes offices

Published December 29, 2007

KARACHI, Dec 28: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement has closed down all its offices across the country for an indefinite period due to the worsening law and order situation in the country in the wake of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto’s assassination.

Well-placed sources told Dawn that several incidents in which MQM offices came under attack in various parts of the country compelled the Muttahida’s leadership to close its offices for an indefinite period.

However, earlier on Thursday, the party’s coordination committee had declared a three-day mourning period and decided to close its offices and postpone all public meetings, to be held in connection with the Jan 8 general election, for three days.

However, they said that the party’s headquarters Nine Zero in Karachi was functioning as per routine.

The sources said that the MQM had asked the relevant authorities to convene an All Parties Conference (APC) to decide whether to hold general elections on Jan 8 or delay the polls. Party chief Altaf Hussain believed that the matter relating to the election should be decided only after consulting all the political parties, they said.
