LAYYAH, Dec 14: District Nazim Malik Ghulam Haider Thind is using vehicles donated for a noble cause in the election campaign of his daughter Razia Begum, a PML-Q candidate for PP-266.

Reports said that a foreign NGO `GAVI’ had donated three jeeps to the EDO (health) for the Directly Observed Treatment (DOT) programme of tuberculosis in the Layyah district.

The jeeps have been allotted to the district health development centre (DHDC), the deputy district officer (health) and the DOT district coordinator.

The district nazim is also making use of a pickup owned by the EDO (health) in Katcha area of Lohanch Nashaib union council.

A source in the health department said that lady health worker Tahira Iqbal posted at the DHQ Hospital was also running the election campaign of Razia Begum on the orders of the district nazim.

He said a special meeting of lady health workers was held on Friday at the EDO (health) office where health officials directed all the LHWs to run the door-to-door canvassing for the district nazim’s daughter.

He further claimed that the EDO (health) office was bearing all the maintenance and fuel expenses of these vehicles.

When contacted, EDO (health) Dr Fazal Kareem said that a meeting of LHWs was held in connection with the polio programme, but he could not explain why only the LHWs posted in the limits of PP-266 constituency were asked to attend the meeting.

About the misuse of vehicles, the EDO said that one jeep was in use of the district returning officer for the election duty while two others were in possession of the DHO and the DDO(H). However, he said that he would investigate the allegations regarding the misuse of vehicles.
