PESHAWAR, Dec 8: Police on Saturday claimed to have gathered information which may lead to identify the woman who died in an apparent suicide attack in a cantonment area on the Babar road.

A high-ranking official told Dawn that police believed the woman was not a suicide bomber and the explosion had been caused by a remote-controlled device by someone else.

“Her gestures precluded the possibility of her being a suicide bomber. She had either been paid to carry out the attack or deceived by terrorists into carrying out the act,” he said.

“Had she been a trained bomber, she would not have blown herself up in such a manner.”

There was no casualty and no worthwhile damage because of the attack on Dec 4.

Capital City Police Officer Tanveerul Haq confirmed that the woman was not a suicide bomber.

He said the explosive material carried by her appeared to be “very limited” and without the usual mixture of pellets and ball-bearings.

The explosion, he said, was caused by a remote-controlled device, adding that it was an open area otherwise it would have caused a “lot of destruction”.
