KARACHI, Dec 3: A committee has been formed to convert the basic health unit in Baba Bhit Island, UC-4, Keamari Town, to a resource health unit in order to ensure provision of round-the-clock health services at the facility.

The formation of the committee was announced at a meeting presided over by Karachi Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil here on Monday. The meeting was attended by the town and UC officials concerned.

The meeting was told that health units in Baba Bhit, Shamspir and Salehabad islands lacked basic facilities.

Addressing the meeting, Ms Jalil pledged effective steps to provide better healthcare facilities to the people, all fishermen, without any discrimination. She also promised that measures would be taken to resolve water, sewerage and health problems in the areas on a priority basis.

She pointed out that a project costing Rs300 million for laying of a major pipeline for Baba Bhit had been initiated to ensure supply of adequate potable water to the local population.—PPI
