KARACHI, Nov 29: The nomination papers of 46 women candidates, including former minister Dr Hamida Khuhro, were rejected by the provincial election commissioner on Thursday.

The returning officer for reserved seats of women and non-Muslims from Sindh and provincial election commissioner, Chaudhry Qamar-uz-Zaman, carried out the scrutiny of the nomination papers of 133 candidates who had filed nominations against 29 women reserved seats in the Sindh assembly.

After the scrutiny in the presence of the candidates, 83 nomination papers were accepted and 46 rejected while cases of four candidates were deferred.

Prominent among the 46 candidates whose forms were rejected, mostly for want of nomination certificates from their respective parties, were former minister Dr Hamida Khuhro of the PML-Q, ex-MPAs Afshan Imran of the PML-Q, Nasreen Chandio of the PPP, Gulzar Unnar of the PML-F and Kulsoom Nizamani of the MMA.

The four candidates whose cases were deferred to be decided by Dec 3 included Amna alias Saima Jabeen of the PML-Q, Shazia Batool of the ANP, Rafia Azam of the MMA and Shahnaz Begum of the PML-N.

On Friday, nomination papers of non-Muslim candidates would be taken up for scrutiny.

The following are the candidates whose papers were found correct to contest for the women reserved seats:

PML-Q: Saeeda Malik, Tanvir Khalid, Bibi Shahnaz, Dr Huma Mir, Salma Waheed Murad, Dr Sajeela Leghari, Nuzhat Pathan, Syeda Soofia alias Maqbool-un-Nisa, Syeda Bano Siddiqui, Sakina Bano, Farida Maqbool Baloch, Ghazala Shaheen, Zahida Thebo, Rehana Yasmin, Shagufta, Nasreen Riaz and Yasmeen Farrukh.

PML-F: Nusrat Bano, Seher Abbasi, Naila Inam, Faqir Shahnaz Taj, Syeda Marvi Rashdi, Shahzia Phulpoto and Ghazala Mushir

PPP: Tauqeer Fatima Bhutto, Mehreen Razzaq Bhutto, Firdaous Hameed, Ferheen Moghul, Najma Saeed Chaowla, Rina Bozdar, Shama Arif Mithani, Syeda Shehla Raza, Ayesha Khoso, Saira Sheliani, Shamim Ara Panhwar, Farha Naz Ispahani, Rashida Akhtar Panhwar, Kulsoom Akhtar Chandio, Farzana Hanif, Ruqayya Khanum Soomro, Shagufta Jumani, Rukhsana Parween alias Rukhsana Shah, Nargis N.D.
