Russia down Egypt

FUKUOKA (Japan), Nov 26: Athens Olympic bronze medallists Russia whipped African champions Egypt here on Monday to remain undefeated with seven straight wins in the men’s World Cup volleyball tournament.

The Russians, who earlier brushed aside European champions Spain and Asian champions Australia, powered their way through to a 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 victory.

Russia play Puerto Rico, Bulgaria, world champions Brazil and the United States in the last four days of the 12-team round robin competition, in which the top three finishers qualify for next year’s Beijing Olympics.

Also in Fukuoka, Spain beat Argentina 26-24, 25-22, 25-18, and Puerto Rico outclassed Japan 25-23, 25-23, 25-21.In Okayama, South American champions Brazil saw off Tunisia 25-19, 25-16, 25-21 to trail leaders Russia with a 6-1 win-loss record.

World bronze medallists Bulgaria easily beat Australia 25-17, 25-19, 25-13, while the US breezed past South Korea 25-18, 25-15, 25-18.—AFP
