BJP routed in Delhi polls

NEW DELHI, March 28: India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party lost its traditional stronghold of New Delhi in city elections on Thursday, a further blow for the Hindu nationalists who were routed in recent state elections.

The BJP’s first defeat in the capital in 12 years saw its 79 seats in the 134-member Municipal Corporation of Delhi Council slump to just 16.

The main opposition Congress Party gained 108 seats, up from 37 in the 1997 election.
