HYDERABAD, Nov 9: A spontaneous reaction by the PPP activists throughout Sindh against the alleged house arrest of party chairperson Ms Benazir Bhutto was witnessed on Friday.

Reports reaching here from interior Sindh said that protest demonstrations were held at many district headquarters where the party activists burnt tyres. Dozens of workers were reportedly arrested in Mirpurkhas, Dadu and other towns.

In Hyderabad, an urgent meeting of the party was held under the chairmanship of Amanullah Siyal which condemned the detention of Ms Benazir Bhutto and demanded her immediate release.

Speakers including Maula Bux Chandio, Syed Fayaz Ali Shah, Sagheer Qureshi and others said that detention of Ms Bhutto was tantamount to the detention of 160 million people of Pakistan as she was the undisputed leader of the entire country.

They demanded that emergency should be withdrawn, constitution restored and all arrested people, including lawyers, journalists and civil society activists should be released.

Meanwhile, according to a statement faxed to Dawn, the provincial president of PPP, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, has announced that black day will be observed throughout Sindh on Sunday against police violence on the party leaders and workers in Islamabad.

NAWABSHAH: PPP activists staged demonstration against the government for stopping Benazir Bhutto to reach Liaquat Bagh and nationwide crackdown against PPP workers. The activists gathered at the party office at Gharibabad and staged demonstration at Sakrand road.

The protesters raised slogans against the government for imposing emergency and suspending fundamental rights. They were led by Senior Vice President Allah Warayo Rahu, General Secretary Imdad Dhamrah.

KHAIRPUR: President of PPP Khairpur taluka, Amjad Shah Jilani, President City Saleh Ansari, Ali Murad Bhutto, UC Nazim Shadi Shaheed and Sajjada Nasheen of Dargah Loung Faqir, Faqir Sher Ali, and Secretary DBA Abdul Qayoom Shaikh have condemned the house arrest of PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto at Islamabad and demanded her immediate release.

MIRPURKHAS: PPP workers and activists of Sindh People’s Students Federation staged protests demonstrations and burnt tyres at different parts of the city and in many towns of the district against the detention of Ms Bhutto.

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: PPP activists took out rallies in the district while a number of activists were arrested during demonstration and rallies.

BADIN: PPP activists took out rallies in Badin, Golarchi, Talhar, Khorwah and Tando Bago. Police rounded up at least a dozen activists of PPP in the district.

THATTA: PPP activists staged demonstration and blocked the National Highway.

The protesters also burnt tyres. Police reached the spot and cleared the road for vehicular traffic.

DADU: PPP activists took out rallies in Sehwan and Mehar towns, whereas five PPP workers were arrested in Sehwan during the protests rally condemning Ms Bhutto’s detention.

More than 300 PPP workers took out a rally from PPP office to Mehar Press Club.

They were led by former MPA Qazi Shafique Ahmed Mahessar and members of Sindh Council, Fayaz Butt, Talat Mahessar and Mehmood Mahessar.
