HYDERABAD, Oct 6: As per the decisions of the meeting held under the chairmanship of the Sindh Governor, all the non perennial canals will be closed with effect from Oct 16.
This was disclosed by Sindh minister for irrigation and power Syed Ali Mir Shah, which presiding over a meeting of the chief engineers, superintending engineers and project directors in the committee room of the Kotri barrage here on Saturday.
He said that about 55 per cent of water shortage will be experienced during the Rabi season, November 2001 to March 2002.
He called upon the irrigation officials to manage the distribution of water in such a manner that each grower was supplied judicious share of water.
He directed that the rotation programme should be announced in advance and strictly followed.
He stressed upon the officers to update the correct records of rights of Khatedars to ensure that the irrigation cases were prepared correctly and there was no fraudulent transfer and no injustice was done to anyone.
He said that the training programme for assistant engineers and other staff meeting in respect of water accounting among divisions and sub-divisions should be strictly followed and the superintending engineers should carry out desilting in a proper manner to ensure that there was no excessive excavation of canals.
The meeting was attended by the provincial irrigation secretary, the chief engineer of Sukkur Barrage, the chief engineer of Kotri Barrage and others.
SCHOLARSHIP: Prof Dr Mohammad Safar Mirjat of agriculture engineering faculty, irrigation department, Sindh Agriculture University, Tando Jam has been awarded Commonwealth scholarship for post doctorate studies in New Castle University in the UK.
He will conduct research on the affects of subterranean irrigation water and chemicals on human health.
Dr Mirjat obtained his MSc degree from America in 1992 and PhD degree in 1994.
BOOK: A book titled A Pathway to English Language written by Prof Abdul Hadi A Memon of the English language centre, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro, was launched here on Saturday.
The book is meant for the students of engineering universities.
A large number of university teachers, officers and students of Sindh and Mehran universities attended the function.
Speaking on the occasion, vice chancellor Dr A R Memon called upon the faculty members to concentrate on research activities and promised assistance of the university in this regard.
