HYDERABAD, March 23: The president, Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Yousuf Suleman, and the chairman, Standing Committee for Sales Tax, Haji M. Yaqoob, expressed grave concern over the levy of 15 per cent GST on imported as well as locally-manufactured medicines.

They said that the cost of production of medicines in Pakistan was already extremely high and any further increase would have a negative affect on the local pharmaceutical industry.

In a joint statement issued on Saturday, they said that the poor people would not be able to purchase life-saving drugs.

They reminded the government that the health sector was already ignored.

They said that the reduction of import duty on the raw material of medicines from ten per cent to five per cent could not neutralize the negative affect of GST.

They pointed out that the procedure for the payment of GST was also complicated and it would not be possible to maintain a record of thousands of registered medicines.

They appealed to the government to give a second thought about the levy of GST.
