GUJRANWALA, Oct 29: Two convicted murderers will be hanged in the central jail here on Tuesday (today). On Monday, the convicts had their last meetings with their families.

According to the prosecution, Iqrar Hussain of Cantonment killed Zafar Iqbal, while Zakaullah of Ahmed Nagar killed Irshad Ahmad over old enmities a few years ago. A district & sessions court sentenced them to death and the Lahore High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s decision. The president also rejected their appeals for clemency.

Separately on Tuesday, a sessions court issued death warrants for prisoners Shabbir Ahmad and Muhammad Mansha and ordered their hanging on Nov 15. According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Sarwar of Sabzi Mandi and Muhammad Mansha of Sadar over enmities in 1992 and 1996, respectively.

RTA SLAMMED: Motorcycle rickshaw owners and drivers slammed the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) for banning ‘four-stroke’ rickshaws on GT Road and threatened to block the main road if the decision was not withdrawn.

Speaking at a meeting, Motorcycle Rickshaw Union President Ajmal Khan said at least 40,000 people were dependent on 4,000 motorcycle rickshaws running in the area. He said the RTA had banned motorcycle rickshaws on GT Road to favour the owners of franchised buses.

KIDNAP ATTEMPT: About six people kidnapped four boys of Sodara Town (Wazirabad), but released them and fled when police chased them. Umer, Naeem, Shakeel and Amir were allegedly kidnapped from Sodara Road.

ARRESTED: Ghakhar police arrested alleged proclaimed offenders Ehsan of Nat Kalan and Nadeem of Banglowabadi when they were ‘trying’ to extort Rs300,000 from a trader.
