ISLAMABAD, Oct 21: Top seed Asim Shafik did not have to make much of an effort Sunday as he swept aside an aging Rashid Malik in straight sets to capture the 18th Federal Cup tennis championship at the Islamabad Club courts.

Asim, who won 6-1, 6-3, quickly built up a 2-0 lead by holding his own serve and then went on to win the first set in 23 minutes after breaking the fifth and seventh games of his rival who double faulted thrice in the seventh game.

In the second set, the score was level at two games-all. But then Asim raced ahead to take a 4-2 lead and captured the set and the match by hitting some fine passing shots.

At 41, Rashid, a former Pakistan No.1, had done well in making it to the final of this tournament but was unable to match Asim, who walked off with a winner’s purse of Rs20,500 and the glittering trophy.

On Saturday, Asim, teaming up with Rashid, had also won the doubles title when they beat the pair of Hameedul Haq and Mushaf Zia 6-2, 6-3.

As many as 150 players took part in the nine events of the tournament that ran for a week with 225 matches being played.
