KARACHI: Newsman’s death condoled

KARACHI, Oct 20: A nationwide convention of journalists should be set up to discuss strategies regarding the review of service structure and modes of employment with the employers.

This demand was put forward at a journalists’ forum on Saturday convened to offer condolences on the death of a cameraman, Arif Khan, who was killed in a bomb blast while covering PPP’s rally on Thursday.

The resolution was tabled by the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) and was unanimously accepted by the participants.

The forum also stressed the need for the provision of life insurance and job security to the journalists besides modern equipment to the cameramen.

KUJ president Shamim-ur-Rahman announced all-out support to the bereaved family of Mr Khan. “The question here arises whether the organisations for which we are working are contributing accordingly or not. Journalists are under threat and in the coming days we have to be more alert and cautious”, he warned.

Karachi Press Club president Sabihuddin Ghousi said that it was the responsibility of the employers to provide protection and compensate those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
