PML-N raps police action

LAHORE, Sept 30: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) workers staged a demonstration outside the Lahore Press Club on Sunday to condemn police action against journalists and lawyers in Islamabad.

The workers displayed banners and placards and raised slogans against police. Speaking on the occasion, Shahbaz Sharif Secretariat Political Secretary Naushad Hamid said the use of force against lawyers and journalists had exposed the government’s claims about democracy and freedom of expression. He said people would always remember journalists and lawyers’ struggle for the restoration of democracy. He condemned the siege of Shahbaz Sharif Secretariat by police and raids at PML-N activists’ houses.

JUP: Jamiat-i-Ulema-i-Pakistan (JUP) Secretary General Qari Zawwar Bahadar has said that the dictatorial regime was resorting to violence to prolong its unconstitutional rule.

In a statement issued here on Sunday, he said the struggle against dictatorship had entered its decisive phase and the rulers were resorting to use of force to suppress their opponents.

The resignations by legislators belonging to component parties of All Pakistan Democratic Movement would prove to be the last nail in the coffin of dictatorship, Mr Bahadar said and added that the masses would also have to play their role in the struggle to oust usurpers from power.

TEACHERS: The Muttahida Mahaz Asatiza has demanded a judicial inquiry into the police excesses against journalists and lawyers on Constitution Avenue in Islamabad on Saturday.

Voicing the demand in a statement issued here on Sunday, Mahaz chairman Hafiz Abdul Nasir and other office-bearers said that identification of officials responsible for brutalities was necessary so that they could be proceeded against for their excesses. They said that teachers supported the struggle of lawyers and journalists for democracy and would cooperate with them in every possible manner.— Reporter
