SIALKOT, Sept 27: Traffic chaos in the city and others urban towns of the district is worsening with each passing day with no solution in sight.

There are just 100 traffic policemen for the entire district of more than 3.4 million population. According to the sanctioned strength, the traffic police force is short of five traffic inspectors, three sub-inspectors, four assistant sub-inspectors, 17 head constables and 70 constables.

According to traffic officials, more than 0.4 million small and medium sized vehicles move in the district each day. Traffic jams are a matter of routine in Sialkot city, Daska, Sambrial and Pasrur besides Sialkot-Daska-Gujranwala Road, Sialkot-Sambrial-Wazirabad Road, Sialkot-Pasrur Road, Zafarwal-Kingra- Narowal Road.

At a meeting with Sialkot DPO Muhammad Ameen recently, SCCI members strongly criticized the poor performance of traffic police.

According to former SCCI president Qaisar Ali Shabir, all traffic signals had been out of ordered in Sialkot city for the last several months but no one had ever bothered to rectify them. Exporters accused traffic police of extorting money from transporters, drivers and conductors. — Correspondent
