KARACHI: Gutter water on major roads

Published October 22, 2001

KARACHI, Oct 21: Puddles of water can be seen standing at different thoroughfares owing to choked sewerage pipelines running beneath these roads.

Citizens hold sanitary workers responsible for the situation as they have failed to ensure proper cleaning of gutter lines across the city at regular intervals, despite the fact that 90 percent of the entire budget allocated for the maintenance of civic facilities in Karachi is spent on paying off the salary of the staffers of the concerned departments.

The localities worst-hit by stagnant water nd intolerable smell include old Sabzi Mandi, the University Road and Shaheed-i-Millat intersection, Jail Road and Jamshed Road.—APP
