KARACHI, Sept 19: A 60-year-old man, Aurangzeb Khan, was shot dead and his friend, Maulana Abdur Rasheed, a prayer leader, injured on Wednesday in Gulistan Colony near Quaidabad, police and witnesses said.

Shah Latif Town police said Aurangzeb and Maulana Rasheed were attacked by two motorcyclists after Zuhar prayer.

Area people said the pillion rider of the motorbike, armed with a pistol, fired two shots at Aurangzeb and Maulana Rasheed, who were returning home after saying Zuhar prayers.

They said Aurangzeb hailed from Abottabad and was a security supervisor in the KESC while Maulana Rasheed is the pesh imam of the area mosque, known as Gulistan Masjid.

An Edhi ambulance shifted the body and the injured to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre sources said Aurangzeb received a fatal bullet wound to the chest, while a bullet hissed through Maulana Rasheed’s nose. The injured was stated to be in stable condition.

The police said Maulana Rasheed was a former activist of the banned Sipah-i-Sahaba. They, however, said it was not yet clear who the actual target of the assailants was.

The police said they did not rule out the possibility of personal enmity behind the incident.

Shah Latif Town police have registered a case against unknown culprits on the complaint of Azhar Iqbal, son of the deceased.
