Protest against bonded labour

Published September 19, 2007

LAHORE, Sept 18: Brick kiln workers staged a demonstration outside the Lahore Press Club on Tuesday to press for implementation of the Bonded Labour Abolition Act 1992.

The demonstrators raised slogans and displayed banners and placards to express resentment against the failure of the respective government authorities to ensure the implementation of the bonded labour law.

Speaking on the occasion, Pakistan Bhatta Mazdoor Union Secretary-General Mahmood Ahmad Butt and Bonded Labour Liberation Front President Malik Rahmat Ali said kiln owners continued to detain workers and their families on the pretext of ‘advances’ despite the fact that the same had been declared unlawful under the Bonded Labour Abolition Act.

They appealed to the government to order enforcement of the law and fix minimum wages for making 1,000 bricks at Rs500.
