KARACHI, Sept 11: Mumbai ensured the Nissar Trophy stayed in India after their dominant performance in the drawn four-day fixture against Karachi Urban at the National Stadium here on Tuesday.

The Ranji Trophy champions were declared deserved winners of the trophy – which was emphatically won by Uttar Pradesh last year with a 316-run defeat of Sialkot at Dharamsala in the inaugural edition – after Karachi Urban were bowled out for 389 to concede a first-innings lead of 234.

The home side survived some anxious moments on the final day before an unfinished partnership of 90 between Saeed bin Nasir (47) and the left-handed Asim Kamal (38) secured a draw after Karachi Urban were forced to follow-on.

The only consolation for Karachi Urban was Khurram Manzoor being adjudged the Man-of-the-Match for scoring an even 200. The talented opener, who resumed at 167, was last out when a full-blooded flick off slow left-armer Iqbal Abdulla was superbly held at short mid-wicket by Mumbai captain Vinayak Mane.

Khurram’s long vigil, lasting 427 balls, included 28 fours and two sixes. In fact, last season’s Quaid-i-Azam Trophy champions lost their last three wickets for the addition of just four runs after Khurram and Azam Hussain (14) added an invaluable 46 for the eighth wicket.

Off-spinner Vikrant Yeligati returned figures of three for 56 in 14 overs. Abdulla toiled through 34.5 overs to claim two for 86. Medium-pacers Aavishkar Salvi and Abhishek Nayar also took two wickets apiece.

Looking visibly weary after bowling almost 132 overs in the first innings, the Mumbai bowlers still managed to grab two quick wickets, including the prized scalp of Khurram, before Karachi Urban batted out the remaining time.

Skipper Hasan Raza celebrated his inclusion in the Pakistan ‘A’ for the coming four-day fixture against Australia in Faisalabad by putting on 56 for the third-wicket with Asif Zakir until Abdulla cut short his innings of 25 with LBW verdict.

Yeligati then got rid of Asif for 21 to give Mumbai a faint hope of pulling off an outright win. But Saeed bin Nasir, who made 92 in the first innings, and Asim held firm before the match was surprisingly called after the second of the 15 mandatory overs with Karachi Urban on 172 for four.

However, the honours in this match clearly were with Mumbai, who took the field with no less than five debutants.
