ISLAMABAD, Sept 7: The central executive committee of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl), a major component of the

Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, opened its two-day meeting here on Friday.

The committee may empower Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rahman, who chaired the meeting, to take any step which enhanced his chances of entering the power corridors.

Maulana Fazl, who is also MMA secretary general, had admitted in recent interviews that he was offered the office of prime minister by Pakistan Muslim League president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain in return for supporting Gen Pervez Musharraf for his re-election as president.

It is claimed that the Maulana had assured Chaudhry Shujaat to come back with a response after consulting his party’s executive committee.

The meeting would also discuss how to deal with Jamaat-i-Islami in the NWFP where it is pitted against Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F.
