KARACHI, Aug 31: Keeping alive the tradition, female candidates clinched all the top positions in the HSC-II (pre-medical) examination results announced by the Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi (BIEK) on Friday.
Sana Shaheen, daughter of Shahabuddin Malik, of the PECHS Govt Girls College, securing 985 marks out of 1,100, clinched the first position while student of the same college Sadia Ishaq, daughter of Mohammad Ishaq, stood second by securing 978 marks and Aniqa Ahsan, daughter of Ahsan Zafar, of the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Karimabad, got the third position with 975 marks.
Syed Shayan Ahmed, son of Syed Ziauddin Ahmed, of the Adamjee Government Science College, topped among the male candidates by securing 969 marks and stood sixth on the overall merit list.
According to statistics, as many as 16,385 candidates appeared in the HSC-II (pre-medical) examination while the overall pass percentage remained 52.2.
As many as 580 candidates secured A-1 grade, 2,171 got A grade, 2,602 secured B grade, 2,287 passed the exams in C grade, 789 got D grade and 12 managed to secure E grade.
Grace marks
Although, the board had awarded two per cent grace marks to the students on the directives of the Sindh governor, still the pass percentage had declined by 2.7 per cent as compared to the last year’s results which was 54.9 per cent.
Commenting on this decline, BIEK chairman Anwar Ahmed Zai said that it indicated that the board’s steps against the ‘copy culture’ had proved successful.
Mr Zai said that the board had added two per cent grace marks to each paper of every candidate and that had also been included in the final tabulations so that no change in the results of this year’s candidates occurred if any of them applied for a duplicate marks sheet in the future.
He said that the board had decided to introduce radical changes in the paper pattern from the next year.
Besides, he said, the number of vigilance committees and their powers would also be enhanced.
The board’s present computer system based on 15-year-old software would also be replaced next year, Mr Zai said.
