KARACHI, Aug 16: An anti-terrorism court-1 on Thursday recorded the deposition of the last prosecution witness -- Investigation Officer Inspector Wahid Bux -- in the case of kidnapping, rape and murder of a minor girl committed on Feb 22, 2006 in the Rizvia Society police station.

Judge Ghulam Ali A. Samtio of the ATC-1, conducting the trial, recorded the statement of the IO, who narrated the story. He said the accused was caught red-handed while throwing the body of the girl wrapped in a piece of cloth and that he himself had confessed it before the police officials.

Referring to the laboratory tests, medical reports and statements of the witnesses, the IO said it was a proven case against the accused.

Special Public Prosecutor Niamat Ali Randhawa informed the court that the statements of eight prosecution witnesses had been recorded and the IO was the last witness in the case.

The court also recorded the statement of the accused, Saleem Ahmed alias Babloo, son of Abdur Rasheed, who again pleaded not guilty.

The court fixed Aug 21 for final arguments of both the defence and prosecution sides.

Besides the police personnel and private witnesses, two doctors and a judicial magistrate have also recorded their statements as prosecution witnesses.

The accused was indicted on July 23 but he had pleaded not guilty and had opted to contest the case.

According to the prosecution, the three-year-old girl was kidnapped from near her house and subjected to rape by the accused. The girl fainted and later died. The accused wrapped her body into a cloth sheet and threw it into a sewer.

However, a police constable and a resident of the locality caught him on suspicion of having committed some crime.

He was brought to the Rizvia Society police station, where, according to the police, he confessed to his crime. The police later retrieved the body from the Gutter Baghicha section of the sewer with the help of Edhi volunteers.
