Amendment not needed, says PML

ISLAMABAD, Aug 12: Pakistan Muslim League (PML) president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Sunday insisted that President Musharraf could be re-elected in uniform for the next term in accordance with the 17th amendment.

Responding to a question during a television interview following remarks made by the attorney-general that an amendment would be required before the presidential elections, Chaudhry Shujaat said the issue had been fully covered in the LFO, known as the 17th amendment.

Asked about the advice for imposition of emergency that he had given to the President Musharraf, the PML chief said: “Giving a political advice on the basis of ground realities which was eventually not accepted was not a sin”.

He said he had given the advice for ‘limited emergency’ to meet the challenges of extremism and terrorism in the wake of a terrorist attack on the interior minister and in his view the situation still called for imposition of emergency for which there were provisions in the Constitution.

On the question of emergency, the attorney-general said: “Neither any legal advice had been given nor it had been documented by the law ministry as it was a political move which was finally abandoned.”

When asked about the mood of the people, Chaudhry Shujaat said: “A change will come through the general elections”.
