LAHORE, Aug 10: The parliamentary party of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) on Friday praised President Pervez Musharraf for “his role in stability of democracy and completion of constitutional term of assemblies despite unfavourable circumstances and opposition by undemocratic forces”.

The meeting presided over by Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi adopted a resolution moved by Provincial Law Minister Basharat Raja, eulogising “interest and commitment of Gen Musharraf with democracy and democratic institutions”.

The resolution states: “This meeting of the PML parliamentary committee and its allied parties assures its full support to Gen Musharraf for his re-election as president.

“It also supports the assertion of Gen Musharraf that his re-election in uniform is essential for continuity and stability of the democratic system in the country. The party will not only vote for the president but also run the election campaign for him under the leadership of Pervaiz Elahi.”

Addressing the meeting, the chief minister said: “We have complete confidence and faith in the leadership of Gen Musharraf, who has steered the country out of a critical situation and put it on the road to progress and prosperity.”

He said the PML would win the next elections on the basis of its public service and performance and would foil the conspiracies of opposition through unity in its ranks.

SAPLINGS: The chief minister said 13 million saplings would be planted in the province during the monsoon tree plantation campaign so that a pollution-free green Punjab was achieved.

Addressing the participants in a function at Madar-i-Millat Park on The Mall, he said 100,000 saplings would be planted in Lahore.

Pervaiz Elahi said “Green Punjab” was an important feature of the development strategy of the government. A master plan was also being implemented for forestation, which would strengthen agri-economy and the wood industry.

He said during the plantation campaign, 4.55 million saplings would be planted on the forest department’s land, 0.80 million on other state land, 2.40 million on the land administered by the armed forces and 5.20 million on private land.

He said 470 sale points had been set up in all districts of the province where 30 million saplings had been provided. He said equal attention would be paid to the protection and growth of existing plants in the campaign.

NEW BLOCK: Pervaiz Elahi said the foundation stone of a new block of the Nazria-i-Pakistan Foundation costing Rs650 million would be laid on Aug 14.

Talking to members of the Foundation at Aiwan-i-Tehrik-i-Pakistan, he said foundation chairman Majid Nizami would lay the foundation stone of the building.

He directed the authorities to install an elevator and build a gate and a fence around the foundation building. The management of the Muslim League High School near Railway Headquarters was also being handed over to the foundation and a fund would also be set up so that this educational institution was transformed into a model school.

MEETING: An MPA from Mandi Bahauddin, Ehsan Elahi Chaudhry, called on the chief minister and apprised him of the problems of his area.
