PESHAWAR, Aug 4: The NWFP cabinet committee on provincial autonomy has proposed various amendments in the 1973 Constitution to ensure maximum provincial autonomy.

The committee’s meeting, presided over by the NWFP Minster for Education, Maulana Fazle Ali Haqqani, was attended by other members, including provincial ministers Inayatullah Khan and Asif Iqbal Daudzai, administrative secretaries, advocate-general and other authorities concerned.

On Saturday the committee reviewed articles 100 to 159 of the Constitution in the light of draft amendments proposed by Qazi Anwar and advocate-general of the NWFP to remove ambiguity and ensure maximum autonomy.

The amendments included delegation of powers to the provincial governments to make appointments on key posts in the province with respect to the chief secretary, the IGP, and the advocate-general, enhancing the provinces representation in the Council of Common Interest besides holding quarterly meetings of the CCI for early resolution of disputes.

The chairman of the committee said all political parties would be taken into confidence before finalising and sending the recommendations to the federal government.—PPI
