KARACHI, Aug 3: Pakistani and Indian authorities have agreed to release at least 60 fishermen imprisoned in the two countries for poaching in each other’s territorial waters, a senior official said on Friday.

“The two countries have reached a broad agreement according to which Pakistan will release 48 Indian fishermen and India will release 12 Pakistani citizens,” a senior official told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

“The release of fishermen is a gesture of goodwill,” said the official, adding they would be released on August 12 and exchanged the following day at the Wagah border crossing.

Some 357 Indian fishermen remain in Pakistani custody, while more than 300 Pakistanis are believed to be detained in India, according to prison officials.
