PESHAWAR, Aug 2: A large number of students of the University of Peshawar on Thursday held a protest demonstration outside the Peshawar Press Club against the murder of Mr Ehsanuddin, a former president of the Chitral Students’ Association, inside the campus on Tuesday.

The demonstration was organised by the Muttahida Students Mahaz, a conglomerate of different students’ organisations struggling for restoration of students’ unions.

The protesters chanted slogans against the university administration and police detailed at the campus. They carried placards inscribed with slogans against the “pathetic attitude” of university authorities and the campus police.

They vowed to continue their protest till the acceptance of their six-point demand submitted with the administration.

They said the killing of Mr Ehsanuddin in front of Hostel-1 was a result of the administration’s negligence.

They also condemned the police stance on the murder.

Speaking on the occasion, Chitral Students’ Association president Naveedur Rehman Chaghtai said a heavy contingent of police was deployed inside the campus, but it had failed to provide protection to students. He said there was no check on criminals roaming inside the university.

He said the university police were responsible for the security of students inside the campus.

Mr Chaghtai said they had conveyed to the university administration to expel the inept police force from the campus and get the killers of Mr Ehsanuddin arrested in three days.

Kifaytullah Khan, president of the Pakhtun Students Federation, campus unit, said students’ organisations were united against the growing incidents of the lawlessness at the campus.

He said students were being chased for speaking against the university administration and in favour of their genuine demands. He said the murder of Mr Ehsanuddin was a blow to the entire student community.

NWFP People’s Students Federation vice-president Malik Amjid Khan urged the NWFP government to hold an inquiry into the incident and register a murder case against people involved in the killing of Ehsanuddin.

He said a statement by the university provost that Mr Ehsanuyddin was not a student of the university was a move to hide the identity of the killers. The students’ community would not allow the administration and police to shelve the murder case, he vowed.

He demanded early arrest of the killers, resignation by the university administration, withdrawal of police force from the campus, constitution of a students’ peace committee and banning entry of criminal groups inside the campus.

Rafiullah Nazim of the Islami Jamiat Tulba offered prayers for Mr Ehsanuddin.

The students had also taken out a protest procession on Wednesday evening against the killing of the student.
