PESHAWAR, July 28: Two people, including the son of an MPA of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, were arrested on charges of carrying liquor and fake currency notes, official sources said.

Some other sources said Samiullah Khan, the son of MPA Abdul Razzak Mujadadi, and his friend, Abdul Haq, were travelling in a car when police arrested them at the Hayatabad check post on July 26.

An FIR was registered at Hayatabad police station against the arrested people under section 489 (B) of the Pakistan Penal Code, dealing with fake currency, and section 4 of the Prohibition (Enforcement of Hudood) Order, 1979, said the sources, adding that accused were produced before a court of judicial magistrate on July 27 and were sent to judicial lockup.

Peshawar District Bar Association president Maulana Shamsul Haq on Saturday filed bail petitions for the accused before the judicial magistrate, stating that they were falsely implicated in the case and they should be released on bail. He claimed that liquor and fake currency were not seized from their possession.

The court has fixed July 30 for hearing the petition and put on notice concerned police officers, directing them to produce the record.

According to the FIR, the two arrested people were travelling in a car bearing registration number KTB-4726 when they were signalled to stop by the police at the Hayatabad check post. During search the police allegedly seized a bottle of liquor and fake currency notes including four notes of 1000 denomination, five notes of 500 denomination and two notes of 100 denomination from their possession.

The sources said initially the MPA’s son told a wrong name to police and tried to influence them.

Officials told this correspondent that when police started investigation after registering the FIR, they received many telephone calls from some influential people, asking the police to release the arrested people.

“Although we were under immense pressure, we registered the case and put the accused behind the bars,” a police officer told this correspondent on the condition of anonymity.

The sources said a high-ranking police officer attached to the chief minister security squad visited the police station and requested the police to release the two men. However, the police approached their high-ups who directed them to take appropriate action in accordance with law, the sources added.
