LONDON, July 25: British Prime Minister Gordon brown has proposed a series of measures which he believes will strengthen national security and help defeat terrorism. The proposals include a range of options for changing the current 28-day limit on holding terror suspects without charge, the introduction of a border police and increased use of biometric visas, the use of identity cards and support for local authorities and community groups to fight violent extremism.

In a statement on national security delivered to parliament, he said: “Our priority as a government is a Britain strong in security, robust in resolve and resilient in response, so that as a nation we both defeat terrorism and isolate violent extremism, wherever we confront it and whatever its source.”

The prime minister explained that the government would be consulting on four options for changing the 28-day limit.
