TOBA TEK SINGH, March 8: Some district council members on Friday condemned the reported harassment of a girl allegedly raped by her stepfather.
Moving a resolution in this regard, Farooq Ahsan said the suspect had not been arrested despite cancellation of his bail before arrest. Instead, he said, an ASI of the Saddar police had gone to Chak 92-JB to arrest the girl and threatened to implicate her in a zina case. The member demanded action against police.
Speaking in support of the motion, Tariq Saeed proposed that a district council resolution be sent to the district police chief. Naib Nazim Haji Ghulam Rabbani, who was presiding over session, requested the Nazim instead to write a letter to the SP.
Tahir Pervaiz of the Nazim’s group claimed that the accused had been arrested.
The council also passed a resolution moved by Javed Akram condemning killing of Muslims in India. Mian Shoaib, Tariq Saeed, Saifullah Cheema and Arshad Noori spoke on the resolution.
OPPOSITION MEETING: Opposition members in the district council met here on Friday with former federal minister Asadur Rahman in the chair. The meeting was also attended by ex-MPA Chaudhry Amjad Ali Warraich, Ghiasuddin Janbaz, ex-MPA Sardar Masood Khan Gadhi and Rana Azam advocate.
It was decided to field a single candidate for the district public safety commission election. Three candidates — Farooq Ahsan, Jilani Tariq and Ayub Anjum — announced their withdrawal from the race in support of Malik Amjad Yaqoob. Mrs Shaheen Farooq will be the opposition candidate for the seat reserved for women.
